Make friends with shadows
Have you ever tried to play with your shadow when you were a little girl or boy? Obviously you have. You have also watched your shadow become larger or smaller, shorter or longer many times. It has simply been with you ever since you were born. As an opaque object, you produce that sort of a dark shape of you just by blocking the light. Shadows are quite interesting. They can be a relief on a hot sunny day or they can be a form of fun. Do you know that a long time ago people were telling stories using shadows? In science lesoons, children from stages 5a and b from the international school decided to take that challenge, too. Supervised by their tutors, they made silhouettes and shadow puppets to tell some interesting stories. The kids also observed how the size of a shadow is affected by the position of the object. They learnt that they could tell the time using shadows. They were also investigating how shadow changes in length and position throughout the day. Fun turned into a great science experiment during which young scientists could identify factors, repeat the measurement, and form important conclusions.
